Mission #313: Those Pesky Plants

USS Maxwell, NCC-21873, is a Nova-class science and survey vessel based out of Pinastri Colony on the Second Life Grid. We are currently a mission of exploration in the Hapke Cluster, an open star cluster of some 10,000 star systems. We are open to new crew! Please inquire with Captain Nora Gerhadsen or with Commander April Coswell. We are particularly interested in Science, Engineering and Operations officers.

Roleplay Times: Mondays 5pm to 7pm SLT
Commanding Officer: Nora Gerhadsen
Executive Officer: Jayce Rebel

Mission Name: Those Pesky Plants

Story Concept: Nora Gerhadsen

The following information is IN CHARACTER information.

Location: Deep Space, the Hapke Cluster, enroute to the Hapke 8344 System

Alert Status: no alerts

USS Maxwell is in deep space, enroute from our reasonably uneventful survey of the Hapke 8315 System to what will likely be another uneventful survey of the Hapke 8344 System. On the other hand, given all the excitement we have endured in recent months, a little boredom couldn't hurt. All systems, oddly enough, seem to be perfectly nominal, and this particular passage is being completely routine. It's almost eerie -- let's not jinx it.

OOC Notes:

- This notecard was done after the fact.

- This was a "day in the life" episode. The purpose of these episodes is to allow crew members to try telling stories of their own, perhaps roping others into what they're doing. Tonight, we had a number of smaller stories going on -- the to-do in the Auxiliary Hydroponics Lab (Nora, Sinbad, Arbre, Jak, Phoenix) which later included time in the lab (Arbre, Drewski, Siobhan); we also had different science with a Namadolian sample being done in the xenobiology lab (Drewski, Siobhan). There was some sort of to-do in the Mess Hall (Te'ellis, Emma, Jayce, Phoenix, Nora); we had various activities on the bridge (Siobhan, Jayce, Jak, Talon, Ezra, Sinbad, Kristoff), in Engineering (Jak, Sandie, Phoenix), and in Sick Bay (Ezra, Emma). So next time, think about what you might want to do! Got a story you want to develop for your character? Maybe it's something suitable for an evening like tonight! Maybe we can develop it into a bigger story by first introducing it into a "day in the life" evening!

- We have returned to the Hapke Cluster! Got an idea for a mission out here? Write it up in a notecard, and let's talk about it! I love it when members of the crew do their story ideas!

* These duties are very general ideas, feel free to add to them and fill things in.

--> We are a science and survey ship. That means we find weird stuff sometimes. Create! Let's see what we all can come up with!

* Please allow people to do their jobs and be thoughtful of the fact that people join departments and divisions to do their jobs. Try not to step on their functions. If you have something to help someone (advise that they may or may not follow) instead of saying something publically, it might be more useful to IM them and discuss it with them.

* Departments should be working together. There should be enough possibilities for everyone as long as they all work together and cooperatively. Do not be afraid to do OOC planning in IM.

* This is more or less freeform, but please don't have it as "Q did this". We need to get ourselves out of our own jams (not that this has ever been a problem with this crew).

Remember that the point of all this is to have fun! Good luck and have at!

Command Log:

Stardate: 210510

Location: Deep Space, the Hapke Cluster, enroute to the Hapke 8344 System

Alert Status: green

USS Maxwell continues in a totally nominal cruise toward the Hapke 8344 System. All systems are functioning flawlessly. It's almost as though someone magically replaced the Maxwell with a brand-new ship, and she was no longer the experimental, cobbled-together affair that she truly is. The Science Department is conducting analysis of samples and data collected in the Naam'Adol System, including the study of some sort of crustacean. We do seem to have an actual problem in the hydroponics labs, however. The Krytellian Rumispoors seem to be unhealthy, as well as the carnivorous mushrooms from Prbvek V. In particular, the knemotoxin that covers the Krytellian Rumispoors seems to have lost some of its toxicity. It is still quite toxic, and the Rumispoors must be regarded as the single most dangerous object or living thing on the Maxwell. A single light touch of the knemotoxin on the skin can be fatal. The knemotoxin is relatively high viscosity, and covers the the Rumispoors like a coating. The carnivorous mushrooms are relatively harmless, for all they might look terrifying, though it's important not to attempt to pull one's limbs out of their mouths if they bite. It's much better to simply open the mouths again.

Samples were taking from the Rumispoor that seems most affected by whatever is going on. A knemotoxin sample was taken via swab, and a sample of the soil was taken for molecular analysis. Oddly enough, whatever is happening in there, the planters themselves do not seem to be able to sort out source. We need a fuller analysis than can be had even there.

Implications/Outlook

The most disturbing issue about the Rumispoor/mushroom problem is that the source of the problem is unknown. Clearly there has been some sort of state change, and the fact that this happened in planters holding two different species seems to suggest that this is an issue external to the species affected. More, it has appeared both in the plants in the auxiliary hydroponics lab (including those Rumispoors beyond the forcefields) as well as in the plants in the CO's Ready Room, one of the tertiary hydroponics labs on the ship. This suggests that if there is a molecular or bioagent causing this issue, it might be present throughout the ship. Will this agent cause other problems? As soon as we understand what's causing the problem, the data will need to go to Medical for evaluation of potential issues for the crew. But then there's the larger question -- how did this happen? And how do we fix it?
