The crew of the SS Athena depart to a distant listening post to perform repairs.

Prelude

Captain's log, stardate 110109:

We have lost contact with one of our outer listening posts; the second time in two weeks. The original repair crew found some sensors out of alignment and a communications sub-system that was out of commission. I have decided to lead an away team to coordinate the repairs this time, in hopes that this repair will last longer than the last one.

Events

Travel to the listening post was uneventful. The crew were given further briefing and a plan of attack was discussed.

Upon docking, LT Nvara performed an initial sweep of the area, with LT Juventa, LT Moonshadow, and myself following. Upon reaching the control centre, LT Juventa and myself started running diagnostics. It was not long before it became obvious that someone had been tampering with the controls. LT Moonshadow performed a scan of the area, looking for evidence that might ascertain the being or beings responsible. Meanwhile, LT Juventa was able to ascertain that the listening post was still transmitting, but to an unknown entity. Furthermore, the focus of the listening post was no longer deep space, but Pinastri itself. The malicious programming was archived on our runabout's computers, with the intent to further analyze it on Athena. Repairs were then performed, returning the listening post to its original mission, and we gathered our items and disembarked for Athena.

Within several minutes, long range sensors indicated an unidentified craft approaching the listening post we had departed from. We adjusted course, hailing the vessel, with no response. After continued hails, and approaching the listening post, an entity beamed aboard our runabout. Initial attempts at communication were futile, with the universal translator having difficulty locking on to a dialect. LT Moonshadow, on a hunch, attempted communicating using Drow, to which the being responded. With this knowledge, we were able to modify the universal translator to facilitate communication with the being. It turns out that LT Moonshadow's hunch was correct, and the being was of similar race to her own. Speaking to the being, who appeared quite averse to males, it turns out that they were responsible for the changes to our listening post, with the hope being to learn from us prior to engaging us diplomatically. She appeared sincere, and LT Moonshadow expressed this as well. After further discussion, she agreed to come to Athena with us, with her vessel tractored by ours.

I am eager to learn more of this race, perhaps someday an ally.
