We are once again aboard the USS Goddard. This time heading to install a duckblind on Menlo Prime, home of Kanzi Dax. Kanzi was a guard on the recently liberated mining colony, and when we went to bring her home, it was discovered they were a pre-warp society at a level similar to Earth in the 14th century.

Kanzi chose to remain with us, but it was decided that Lt Cmdr Garethya Mongrain and Ens Scottybrit "Skot Brit" Resident would set up a duckblind to learn more about these people.

Ensign Brit's field of specialization is anthropology, so I'm putting him in charge of coordinating everything needed. He has arranged period costumes, and will be briefing the away team before we head to the surface. Alpha Team will be exploring the local village of Usk while Beta Team installs the physical duckblind.

I have cautioned everyone that this is a pre-warp society, and that the prime directive is in full effect.

Log Entry:

We boarded the USS Goddard and flew the roughly 1.1 light year trip to Menlo Prime at warp 9.9, arriving in a little over 3 hours. We entered a high orbit of 30,000 KM, so that the people on the planet would not be able to detect us (not even as a faint star in the sky). Once we achieved orbit, operations became busy helping to prepare the landing parties for the observation away mission, and distributing mission-specific supplies that they would need.

The mission itself was an “incognito” observation mission. In short, the away teams dressed as locals and beamed down to explore and observe: the culture, the sociological/anthropological aspects, the plant life and event the structures and buildings. In short, we were to gather as much information as possible about this society from covert observation, begin careful not to stand out or call undue attention to ourselves. We posed as travelers from the distant village of “Veracruz.”

The society itself was very similar to an old-earth English village of the 1300s. At first we mixed with the locals at a gathering place called an “Inn.” Later we moved about the village and explored. After about 2 hours of covert observation, we withdrew to a isolated place and beamed back to the ship, where we began to analyze the data we had collected.

Individual Logs: LTjg Tess Tison
Position During Mission: Helm and Ops

We beamed down to the surface and made our way to the village of USK. I must confess that from an operations standpoint, it was a very quiet mission. There were no communications signals or power signatures to analyze, no equipment to manage, etc. I was permitted to conceal a tricorder in my skirt. But truth be told, there was not a whole lot to use the tricorder on.

When we first arrived the village, we discovered a raised platform in the center with some unusual structures on it. One for the structures was made out of wood and looked like pictures I saw in a history file of something called “stockades.” I believe they were indented to constrain and humiliate people as some type of punishment. There was also a wooden block with a large metal ax in it. I scanned the ax with my tricorder and found traces of human blood. One trace was approximately 72 hours old, another was 2 weeks old and another about a month old. That brought me to the alarming realization that this society practiced public executions on a somewhat regular bases. Imagine executing criminals—how barbaric and uncivilized!

We proceeding into a more densely populated area and found a structure called an “Inn,” which served as a social gathering place as well as a place for travelers to rest. We were treated with hospitality and served drinks. I had hot tea and it was very good. The people seemed friendly enough, but they seemed a bit reluctant to give out information or talk about themselves. I tried to engage several of them in conversations asking mildly personal questions like what type of work did and asked them to tell me a bit about it, etc. None of them were forthcoming with answers. I would classify them as friendly but guarded.

After a while, Commander Randt excused us from the social exchange at the Inn and set set about the village to explore. I found some unusual readings on my tricorder and went to investigate. It led me to a blacksmith's shop, where they molded metal by heating it in a fire and then beating it into its desired shape with a maillot. I reported my findings via combadge and Ens Brit of science expressed an interest in it, so I transmitted the coordinates to him.

Then I wandered through an arch-shaped opening in the stone wall surrounding the city. I found myself in a forest area. No one was around, so I was able to use my tricorder freely. There really wasn't anything to scan, just trees, flowers and other plants. I decided to scan the local vegetation and (since I really did not have much else to do), I ran an genetic analysis on the plants, comparing them to their seeming counterparts on earth. To my surprise, I discovered they were a 100% genetic match with earth plants. That should not be possible on an alien planet. They could be close... maybe an 80 or 90% match, but the only way they could be a 100% match is if they were actually imported from earth. The findings were so surprising that I reported them to commander Randt by combadge. Once he discovered I had left the confines of the village, he instructed me to return immediately because he felt it was unsafe. I rejoined the away team and stayed with them for the duration of the mission.

CONCLUSION:

Other members of the landing party also found genetic matches between local flora / fauna and their Terran counterparts. These matches were so close that it proved they were imported from earth and used to populate the planet. Since the people on the planet only possessed 14th century technology, they obviously were not the ones who did it. In fact, there is a good chance that the people living here were also abducted from earth and deposited on an exact duplication on an M-class planet in the Delta quadrant. So who would do this and why?

We are setting up an observation station to try and get answers to these questions.

At approximately 17:23 hours we beamed aboard the USS Goddard from the station, We took our stations and beam power up and undocking procedures. We left on our 1.1 light year trip at warp 9.9. Once we arrived at the planet we changes into Period cloths. I replicated a backpack from that time period and fitted it with a sheath for a dagger and a small holo pocket that concealed 2 hand phasers and a tricorder. We beamed to the surface near the docks and walked into town. Lt Tison noticed the Execution block in the center of town. This is barbaric by our standards but really common for this time period.

We headed to an area that showed a high concentration of life forms it was a large building which was named an Inn. Databases say an Inn is a place of temporary logging for visitors to a village or town. The in also served food and drink in a Dining area I had a glass of Tea. While I was drinking my refreshments I spoke to a few people including a woman in metal armor. She was a Guards woman in fact Second in command of the Guard. I was shocked to learn that members of the Guard including the Second in command are Female. The Guard is a security organizing much liked a local militia and police force. So this woman I was speaking to was basically my 14th century counterpart.

After I finish my tea I join my other team members exploring the town. We collected blood and hair samples from various locations including the Execution block. . We also found a Christian church building the inside held a few artifacts I recognized from my mother’s religion. This could very well have been an Ancient catholic church. We looked at Weavers and seamstress shop were they make cloth clothing from wool and a Blacksmith shop where they Forge metal into weapons and armor using extreme heat and hammers and tools to shape the hot metal into their desired form. All evidence we collected pointed to these humans being transplanted from earth. More Study is needed to prove this.

After our exploration we left to the edge of town and beamed back to USS Goddard. It was decided that along with a science team I would take a Security detail to explore the outlying areas of the city looking for clues of the reported bandits. These bandits may be related to the mining slave operations run by the group who had taken Kanzi in the first place. Commander Randt would like me to get to the bottom of this and determine if these bandits are local thieves or if they are aliens using rumors of bandits to prey on these people.

Conclusion:
in conclusion I believe the humans animals and plant life t be transplanted here from 13th century earth, While they appear to have evolved social they did not evolve Technologically, This could be because they had no outside influence such as war to drive these advances. I learned in history studies that Large scale war or a Cold war in some cases Drove a lot of earths early technological advances. I would suggest the Anthropologist should research this theory.

Following the attempted return of Kanzi Dax to her home planet of Menlo Prime, members of the Tranquility returned to do a preliminary study of the planet's pre-warp society and to install a duckblind. the away team consisted of myself, Cmdr Kinney Randt-Rhode, Lt Cmdr Garethya Mongrain, Ens. Skot Brit, LTjg Hermione Highwater, LTjg Tess Tison, and Ens Jamie Czavicevic.
WE all requisitioned clothing approrpriate to the planet's era whic was roughly equivalent to 14th century (1300s) earth. This of course presented some problems as it would be unseemly for females to be openly bearing arms. I decided to wear a dagger sheathed to my thigh, Ens. Czavicevic carried a backpack that contained some appropriate items and two carefully concealed hand phasers in case of emergency. As luck would have it there was no need to rely on any weapons during our visit.

The team beamed onto a small dock on the outskirts of town. Ltjg Highwater and I elected to take a horse and cart to look at the surroundings. I used to ride horses and was also used to guiding a cart from my days on my grandparents farm in old Ireland, but on this day the training was better used to prevent injury as the horse caught the side of a deep hole bringing the cart wheel into the hole and overturning the cart. Hermione and I were luckily thrown free ((actually a rough sim crossing and I , for one disappeared under the sim some place)).

Picking ourselves up, the cart disengaging and the horse running off, we approached a gentleman who escorted us to the inn. I must say I was so enthralled by all that I was seeing. I majored in ancient cultures and religions, including myths and legends when I was at university. This village was exactly the same as many of the settings I visualized for the stories I read. After warming myself by the fire, I took my leave to explore on foot, the village. I was amazed at the similarities between this village and Menlo Prime. The local produce looked exactly like the potatoes, beans, and beets found on earth. I ventured closer to the castle and found an area for games, archery, and jousting were two. One other interesting site appeared to be a battle arena. I examined the two areas which appeared to be the "stands" or "bases" of the contestants. From these two spots it appeared the competitors would shoot arrows at each other. I saw a fear smears of what looked like blood in the grass surrounding.

I walked towards the castle and saw a large poster defining the "Rules of Chivalry. I had no recording device with me but I have attempted a reproduction below. Venturing further I entered the castle gate. The square consisted of some open market stalls, a communal well, keeps at each corner, the main building and a small church. It is apparent that the society is closely parallel to that of 1300s earth, from the belief in a deity to the armor in the village blacksmith's shop to the demeanor and custom of the locals. Upon my return to the inn, it was decided to return to the Goddard. There was talk of DNA samples. We had some taken from a noose that was used for executions, we assume. I re-entered the inn, and under the guise of paying for our hospitality, the payment was declined, took a mead cup that had been recently used by a local. My coins were left on the bar as payment and I left to re-join the away team to be beamed back aboard the Goddard.

Image

Conclusion: A fascinating culture. The visit certainly created more questions than were answered. It was surmised that either it was a parallel culture, or a transplanted one, but we will not know more until after further observation and scientific analysis of the specimens we collected. The duckblind is in place, and I suppose, selfishly, I hope to some day return.

Log entry:
We boarded the Goddard to head to the Menlo system. We “opened her up” and the journey took hardly any time at all. Before beaming down, we put on facsimiles of the native dress, which were remarkably similar to fourteenth century Terran clothing. I also briefed then on the information acquired thus far, and reminded everyone that we were there as observers, and in no way are to interfere, regardless of what we encounter. We beamed down to an area known to be uninhabited just outside the township of Usk.

The similarity to Earth was striking. From pictures my father had shown me, the area bore a remarkable similarity to a few areas of New Britain. The local flora and fauna continued this pattern of . There were even a few cases where the plant and animal life was identical to Terran composition, at least according to preliminary scans conducted by various members of the away team. Perhaps what will be most telling is the results from various hair, saliva, and blood samples found. There was not enough time to analyze them there. Not to mention, we wanted to keep possible exposure of our tricorders to a minimum. Most importantly, we want to get the most accurate readings, and the equipment back on Tranquility will provide far better results. Although, when Ensign Czavicevic gave me a blood sample pulled from a “head block” (see paragraphs below) I did run a brief scan with my tricorder. There were multiple samples, and so even if we were to run the data right there, it would be a bit too complex at that precise moment. Hence, this was a further reason to run the samples when we get back to our station.

As far as the population themselves, the information we had obtained before hand suggested that they were a highly patriarchal culture, where women were considered more of property, not given equal deserving rights. To the contrary, and much to everyone’s relief, they seemed far more advanced in the matter of gender equality. In fact, one knight that we met in the village was female, in a metallic armor. This would never have been seen in 14th century Earth. There were no signs of discrimination or oppression. In fact, such an enlightened attitude is more parallel to the past couple of hundred years of Terran history (if not modern day).

Not all of the attitudes were so enlightened however. In the middle of the town’s clearing was what is clearly some sort of execution platform. There was a hangman’s noose, and a chopping block that, due to the clear presence of blood, was not used for wood (although elsewhere there were signs that they use wood as their primary source of heat and light). Apparently they still practice the death penalty, and publicly at that. It was a grim reminder that they are still primitive.

This was not indicative of the people themselves. Indeed everyone seemed to be inviting, although several of our questions were met with polite evasion, especially concerning the rumors of bandits outside the town walls. Perhaps this might have a correlation to the space raiders that we know have taken people from this planet.

In fact, our interactions in the what is called an “inn” or “public house” were friendly and festive. It was a center for what Ensign Crystal so appropriately called “a rollicking good time.” As well, they are still using a monetary based system. We had replicated the coins that they use as currency. Though they do not have a Ferengi attitude towards profit. At this inn, we were offered various drinks, including forms of tea, ale, and mead. Upon my asking, we were informed that the first drink was free, of course any after the primary one would have to be paid for. I myself accepted a cup of the mead, of which I was cautious with at first, as I did not want to impair myself in any manner. As fortune would have it, my system did not have an adverse reaction to it, though I’m sure that with different anatomy I would have had to pass on it. I swiped a sample of it for analysis as well, though I’m sure no one saw.

Some of the people that were at the inn was a female who apparently was soon to be married. There was also what Lt Cmdr Mongrain referred to as a “rogue.” I had noticed their interaction as well, and it seems “Raggedyman” was not overjoyed at the wedding announcement, though he did not drop his smooth manner in the slightest.

Also there was a man of the clergy named Martin Luther. At one point the said “May Jehovah bless you”. When I asked about their faith, he curtly replied that they were “Christian.” Not wanting to appear ignorant, in case this was a wide spread belief on the planet, I did not press the matter further. In one of the churches in the town was a type of alter containing crosses. This however does not confirm that they are from Earth specifically, as the cross is found in worship in many areas and several planetary systems. In fact, even on Earth, the cross (or crucifix if it has the addition of a man nailed to it) predates Terran Christianity by millenia. It has been found in Celtic, Aztec, and even Egyptian artifacts, to name a few.

Several of the crew members found “Menlo” versions of themselves, a sort of parallel to what jobs were their counterpart. For instance En Czavicevic met a female knight who was second in command (a sort of vcos) and Lt. Tison described the keeper at the in as a sort of chief of ops. I was no exception. When Lt. Tison mentioned that there was an Forge, I left what I was doing and came to see it, as metallurgy and chemistry are both sciences that we use at UFS. Yet again, the echoes of Earth sounded. There was a forge where a smith could heat the metal to shape it, possibly combining with other metals to form an alloy first, into armor or tools. Next to that was a butcher establishment, with carcasses hanging in the window, most likely to be bled. I agree that the smell was pungent and unpleasant. Cmdr Mongrain seemed a bit disgusted not only by the scene, but also the sanitary implications. It seems they do not yet know of the dangers of bacteria and microbes, nor have they yet found the benefits (let alone the means) of refrigeration in the prevention of disease.

The duck blind itself is coming along nicely. Unfortunately, the engineering team did not have time to complete it, but I have been assured that it is completely hidden. We will have to return later so that they may finish it. In addition to our studies, Security is keen on investigating the connection to the space raiders. If they are indeed continuing to take people from this planet, they surely must be stopped.

Conclusion:

At this point, we cannot be sure as to why Menlo Prime, and the life within it, bares such close resemblance to Earth. Whether they evolved here themselves, were transplanted from Earth, were formed specifically (such as terraforming), or simply an eerily similar, we cannot say at this point. To do so at this point would be pure conjecture. In fact, we are not even sure if the humanoid population has the same DNA as humans. They may turn out to be a different life form altogether, in which case several of the possible origins would be eliminated.

As for the away team, they did admirably in my opinion. Everyone stayed in character, and no one said anything that seemed to elicit more than a laugh. I think that the mission successfully upheld the prime directive today. Of course, each visit we take increased the changes of interfering or making a mistake. Still, we need to determine what is happening here, lest the raiders return. Surely they would have an impact on the culture, and I highly doubt that the raiders have taken any such precaution against a prime directive-like violation. Hopefully both tentative visits kept to a minimum and the use of our duck blind will shed light on the situation and the raiders stopped.

Log entry:

Two away teams were sent to Menlo Prime, the home of Kanzi Dax, the guard we had rescued from the slave asteroid known as Trielous III. The first team was sent to observe the population, flora and fauna. The second team was sent to find a location for an observation site known as a "duck blind". We were also to find out any information on any raids and/or abductions made on the planet.

Individual Reports:

Preliminary information gathered by Science Officer, Ensign Skot Brit indicated that the planet Menlo Prime is a Pre-warp planet currently resembling 14th Century Earth. When we arrived at the planet, we stayed far enough out to not be identified by anyone on the planet and changed into 14th century attire. We transported down to an isolated area near a pier, and walked into town, where the two teams split up. The second team left to find a good location for the observation post while we of the first team left to observe the town. The initial reaction from the crew was the astonishment of an apparatus located in the central square. It appeared to be an executioner's platform, complete with a noose and a long-handled blade sitting in a block of wood. Several samples were taken of blood spattering’s from the blade for further studies.

The population was somewhat surprising, as on 14th Century Earth, it was primarily a patriarchal society, with the women mostly in a subservient role. On Menlo Prime, we spoke to a woman who was the second-in-command of a Knights group, and an equal amongst the males of that group. Her armor was still similar to that of 14thCcentury Earth. There did not appear to be the oppressive nature found during that same time on Earth, although they did uphold the severe penalties, as observed by the findings at the executioner's block.

Other samples were taken of flora, and of animals located in what one calls a "butcher's shop", a place where locals obtain food for meals. Preliminary data indicated that the items were identical to Earth, however, I refrain to speculate on this until the more sophisticated lab work is done back at Tranquility.

Ensign Skot Brit received confirmation that an acceptable site was located for the observation site, and that construction had begun. They also indicated that they had not been observed during the construction.

Conclusion:

The overall mission was positive, as the primary purpose was the location of an acceptable site and construction of the observation post. . Although it had not been completed, and was not fully functional, they were able to install a "cloak" so that it would not be noticed by the community. Further trips will be needed, first to complete the site, and second to do the observing. Ensign Skot Brit, with his background in Anthropology, has been tasked with coordination of any future missions.

It appears that the society of Menlo Prime is currently in a holding pattern in the 14th Century phase, and appears to be so at their own volition. They do not appear to be remotely interested in advancing and will therefore continue to be classed as a Pre-Warp planet.

We were not able to confirm or deny the existence of any raiding parties currently in the planet. Further missions may result in additional information.

Although preliminary tests on Menlo Prime indicate a strong resemblance to Earth, and some exact matches, further, more precise testing of all samples will be done back at Tranquility to determine if Menlo Prime has any ties to Earth.

Individual Reports:
After we traveled back to Tranquility with Kanzi, the option of a duck blind started being discussed. So, finally it was decided that we would go to Menlos Prime. When we got on board the goddard, we were briefed by Ensign Brit on the planet. We had learned that it was like Earth in the 14th Century, where women were considered to be more like property than equals. While on route to the planet, we replicated the proper clothing for the mission and then got ready.
When we beamed down to the planet, we arrived on a small dock near a ship on the outskirts of town. Soon, Ensign Crystal and I saw a horse drawn carriage, to which we could not pass up the chance to see the surrounding area. However no sooner had we started when the horse got caught on the edge of a hole. The horse tried to pull away but ended up tipping the carriage. but luckily Ensign Crystal and I were thrown free. I think that I ended up passing out for a little bit when we were thrown, ((Actually it was a bad sim crossing which caused me to crash.)) Because when I awoke Ensign Crystal was over me and a man had appeared.
We told him that we had been seperated from the rest of our group, and asked him if he could lead us to it. He told us that he was on his way there and we wondered if he could escort us to the inn. Both Ensign Crystal and I met up with the rest of the crew members there. We were invited to sit by the fire. While the others where talking to the people of the village. I began to feel, not that well, and decided to take a step outside for some air and took a look at the shops. Not too long after Ensign Crystal joined me outside, and we looked at the blacksmith shop. While she was speaking to him, I saw a church, and quietly went inside. It was at this point that Jamie came up behind me and told me to be careful. Somehow it was the religious side of me that made me want to go inside of the church. So both I and Jamie walked out of the church. Ensign Brit asked if I was near the church still since he had wanted to see it, so I took him to see it.Afterwards I found my way to the castle where Ensign Crystal came up behind me this time. We saw a code for the men and women of the guard. While she and I both continued to wander. Ensign Brit asked if I could maybe get a reading of their dna to compare it to human dna, but I told him that I did not think I could, at least without bordering on the prime directive. As it turns out they found another way to collect the samples. We beamed back aboard the Goddard and began the voyage back to Tranquiity.
Conclusion:
I think that this has been a successful mission, and I will be interested to see what is uncovered.
