TDRP010: 160612-18 - "Unall Stonewall"

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We support UFSA as much as we can and we provide mentorship to the JOOP & CGSD graduate programs.
We roleplay in-world on a drop-in and scheduled basis. We also add to our history and environment by writing RP Narratives, Mission Logs & Personal Stories for the UFS forum.
Inspired by the ship's namesake, the late Admiral Taylorholic Durant, crew members work to exemplify the behaviour, actions & vision of United Federation Starfleet in everything they do. Our first rule: to be kind to one another. And have fun.
Please note we practice Post Order (P.O.) and One Post in our Roleplays. For further info, contact the C.O.!

=^= Captain's Log - 160612.1200 =^=

Our participation in the Core-Worlder Task Force over, we stopped at a Federation outpost to examine the Kazon vessel before turning it over to Fleet security. All data was transferred to Starfleet, and thus we were free to continue with our original mission of exploration and training.

Astrophysics has expressed interest in taking a look at a phenomena only distantly charted: a class of binary star called a cataclysmic variable. Thus we make our course for this anomoly, which lies more than twenty-five lightyears away from Pinastri, at the intersection of Unall, Tauron, and Nasari Sectors. This appeals to me as I have never been too far in this direction.

Travelling at warp seven it will take us about three days to reach the binary star.

Since the devastation at Pinastri and our subsequent mission as part of the Task Force, we have worked our crew hard with drills and maintenance, not only for training purposes, but to assist them in being focussed. Everyone was upset at what occured and many lost one or more friends or acquaintances in the disaster. It will take time for us to heal.

During our travel time I'd like the crew to have some free time to rest and relax. I have asked the department heads to keep duties relatively light until we reach the anomoly, with minor drills and training sessions.

Apparently one group of junior officers have started an acting troupe, and have invited me to their first performance this evening, a reenactment of the famous Data trial, Riker versus Picard, Captain Phillipa Louvois presiding.

I am also informed another group has organized teams for a debate on the Prime Directive scheduled for tomorrow. They wish me to preside but I would think one of the Vulcan officers would be better suited. Still, I can hardly say no.

I am pleased to see these kind of activities taking place. As long as no one asks me to sing.

=^= Chief Operations Officer Log =^=
Stardate 160613

It seems that wedding bells are in the works. Transporter Chief Matthew O'Reilly and Yeoman Maureen O'Donnell have asked me to approach the Captain on their behalf to request that she perform a ceremony to unite the two. They are both from Old Earth Ireland and want a traditional earth-style wedding, complete with bell-shaped white gown and veil. They would like the captain to perform the ceremony the afternoon of 160614, which is just a bit over 24 hours from now.

I have to confess that I am not at all surprised that these two decided to "tie the knot." However, I am a bit surprised at the "sudden urgency." If I had to guess, I would say that the attack on Pinastri and our subsequent mission emphasized the "danger" of space travel to them. I am guessing they wanted to wed before anything might happen to either of them.

I told the couple that I would be happy to approach the captain on their behalf.

Stardate 160613

The Marine Contingent aboard the ship was told that they'll have some sparetime . Most of the Marines were reported to make combat exercices and training on the shooting range of the ship.

I told Sergeant Major Ruocal to keep an eye on the troop and to pay attention that everyone of them gets some rest, because they have to be as fit as a fiddle in case there'll be an emergency and in case they are needed.

I am very proud on the men and women serving under me. They do a good job till now, but sometimes i have to remind them to have some rest and that it is no shame at all even for a Marine to have some lazy hours.

=^= Captain's Log - 160614.2200 =^=

It's been a rather long day. Besides the normal duties of a Captain, and conferring with the XO and department heads over a myriad of matters - including preparing the ship to approach a rather mysterious kind of anomaly - I presided over a debate on the relevance and ethics of the Prime Directive.

The two debating teams had given some thought to procedures, but not enough in my estimation. I read their brief and we spent the first thirty minutes just sorting out the rules for the debate. We had a quick break and then the debate commenced. As each side had three constructive speeches and three rebuttals, it took some time to hear from everyone, even with time constraints. In the end I felt it was a good exercise and commended them for organizing it. During the coffee hour afterwards I could hear some spirited discussion along with much laughter and I admit it did my heart good to see such liveliness aboard the Durant. We had all been quite muted since the devastation at Pinastri.

I only had a short time then to change and get to Ten-Forward to take my position for the wedding. I had lost some sleep last evening in researching debates, the Prime Directive and wedding ceremonies, in particular, Irish heritage and traditions. I'm pleased to say the ceremony went off without a hitch, my speech and method seemed to be meaningful to those participating and the bride and groom were all smiles at my attempts to bless them in Gaelic. I attended the reception, and the wedding couple eventually went off to the holodeck, where they have been permitted an extended stay in a specially programmed setting.

Then it was a quick return to quarters to change again to duty uniform and back to the bridge. I wanted to be in the big chair as we approached the intersection of the three sectors and the cataclysmic variable. We came to a full stop at the designated coordinates, turned the ship to face the binary system, and are now preparing to launch the class five probe.

We are rotating shield harmonics and helm has standing instructions to move us away should there be even a hint of an issue with our systems.

Gamma shift has the conn and I'm now back in my quarters for a much needed rest. Hopefully there will be no plays, debates, or weddings for a few days!

I shall have to do an extra mile or two tomorrow morning - I had two slices of wedding cake. I avoid this thing as much as possible but.. sometimes it's too tempting to resist.

=^= Captain's Log - 160616.0222 =^=

I felt like I'd only just fallen asleep when I received a hail from the Bridge. The Gamma Duty Officer felt it important to inform me that Science and Operations were of the opinion that one of the subprobes deployed in the binary system has picked up a signal of some kind. I made my way to the bridge, wishing for once that a Raktajino or other caffeine laden drink was not on the forbidden list for me.

Operations is unsure if the subprobe could act as a relay for any message we might try to send back, given the gravimetric and magnetic waves in this area. But I instructed them to broadcast friendship messages on all frequencies, acknowledge the signal if possible and ask if assistance is required.

The thing of it is, Science says the subprobe places the probable source of the signal on the other side of the CV. If we were to investigate further, we would have to circumvent the anomaly, placing it between us and Pinastri. I've called a briefing for 0530 hours. We'll gather reports from all departments before deciding the next course of action. I might manage to get a couple more hours sleep before then, if I'm lucky.

As the troop i was also doing some exercising , training and shoot training. But due to the fact that i also have lots of paperwork to do

- Reading letters of application from marines that wants to join the Flagship of UFS
- Reading and answering the reports from subordinates and superiors
- Reading reports from UFS Fleet members complaining on a handful Marines that seemed to have drunk too much and that started to insult UFS Fleet members
- Fixing appointments to talk to this Marines and their behavior
- Planning some exercises and extra training for the whole Contingent, because it seems that they are bored , otherwise i can't explain the behavior of this few Marines
- Reading old reports about maneuvers and operations we did in the past. Trying to optimize some tactics we used during the maneuvers and operations.

i had to retire to my office, listen to some music (Haydn) to calm down and to do my work.

After that, i'll for sure spend an hour with my Marines to hear what rumours go around in the corps.

=^= Captain's Log - 160618.0444 =^=

Sitting at stationkeeping near a rare binary system known as a cataclysmic variable, we detected a signal from an unknown source via one of our class 5 subprobes. We have attempted to use that same device to broadcast friendship messages and offers of assistance. At this distance from the signal's origin, and with the anomaly between us and whoever has sent it, this is not an easy task. In the end we did receive an acknowledgement of our response, but no other details. We have transmitted again our requests for further information, but all we have received is a cryptic 'help'. Are we not receiving the entire message or are we being stonewalled? Either way, we can't ignore a distress call.

I have given the order for helm to prepare a course circumventing the CV and its associated magnetic and gravimetric distortions. In order to assist science with their studies I have agreed one of our runabouts may stay at this location to receive the probe telemetry. I expect we will be underway by 0500. Given the size of the binary system and our need to keep our systems from harm, we estimate ETA at the signal's probable location in two days.

I have sent a message to Starfleet HQ to let them know we are moving off to assist an unknown entity with an unknown problem... either a fool's errand or going boldly. We shall see.
