Captain's Log:

Stardate: 180530

Alert Status: Yellow

We've received a distress call from the Maxwell, stating they are in the Hapke Cluster with 10 warships hunting them.

Engineering reports we are up to full power, so e are proceeding at maximum warp. Hopefully we can draw the attention of the warships while we sneak a couple runabout in for the search for the Maxwell.

If we are unable to locate them this way, or if the warships prevent us from completing the search, then Commodore Mistwallow has informed us that several other ships are also en route. Between all of us, we should be able to handle both the search and the attacking warships.

Log entry:

While I was recovering from the Skittle incident in sickbay, we received a distress call from the USS Maxwell, stating that they have been attacked by 10 ships of the species Karutak, they have sustained damage, and escape is not possible. We changed course to get to the hapke system.

Initial analysis of the Karutak is that they're... well wolves! An anthropomorphic lupine species, Homo lupus subspecies C.i. karutakus
they are linguistically capable, and have intelligence comparable to humanoids. They have a hierarchy system consisting of an alpha, of which is the leading individual. Others of each pack follow their command, unless a rising beta usurps the alpha, usually very violently. They view themselves as an alpha predator people, all others either competing predators deserving of respect, or prey, deserving of being hunted and killed. They are a bit more complex in their hunting than the Hirogen, and have a more lax honor system than the Klingons, but comparison is not absurd.

According to past dealings with the Maxwell, they will negotiate. However, one must prove themselves to be a superior hunter, such as themselves, in order to garner the respect of such negotiation. Once this show of force has been compromised, talks will break down, and the opposing party then becomes fair game once again. The same can be said for their alpha system. The Alpha is respected and gains great respect and loyalty, until they are no longer deserving of it.

These are not an unintelligent foe, nor are they adorable lap dogs. According to Maxwell logs, they destroyed a crew memeber that they found floating in space by viciously slashing her throat in a communication with the ship. They may have inferior technology, but their keen senses and instinct easily makes up for it. They are crafty, quick, and tenacious. I doubt they'll stop the pursuit of the Maxwell until they are satisfied that they are destroyed.

As our recent encounter with the Karutak has borne out, they hunt in packs and work with tactical formations to maximize the use of their vessels in unison. Their ships can't possibly go faster than warp 7, and most well below that, but they make up for it in numbers and battle tactics. It would not be unreasonable to presume that if they were involved in a fleet war, their strategy would follow a similar pattern of picking off the weak while the alpha ignores them and makes a grand display of show by attacking the strongest one. Despite using a tactic we had recently used in a multi-ship battle, we were unable to overcome their numbers by utilizing our shuttles. Lt. Torgo's shuttle, Thunder, was destroyed. However, he must be glad to know that he died in the heat of battle against a vicious enemy. In the end, we had to retreat.

Conclusion:

Nora- er Fleet Captain Gerhadsen is smart, very smart. We're sure they're using the masking powers of the magnesite in this asteroid field to hide from the Karutak. I'm confident that they're here somewhere, hiding and waiting. What I'm not so sure of is if we can even find them!
