Captain's Log:

Stardate: 180523

Alert Status: Green

Our first contact is continuing, and it has been fascinating to not only meet a new species but also to learn some insight into the soul of my chief of security.

Between the 80' cafe, arcade, and assorted vehicles from 1980's video entertainment, they created an atmosphere that is both familiar and unique, but I don't think I have ever seen Lt Cmdr Jameson look more at home.

It will be a shame to leave these people, but our mission requires us to keep moving. In addition, reports of the Maxwell still not answering hails my ell require us to investigate.

Engineering Log:

Our current first contact mission has actually allowed engineering to catch up on some of the backlogged repair and system upgrade request. A full system report is attached below but all primary systems show green at this time. Per command's request we have been rotating at least one or two senior engineering officers down to the planet in the hopes of learning more about their society and their technology. I can't speak for the Chief or Vice Chief but the visits down to the planet have been interesting if nothing else. Command has stated that we plan to spend at least a few more days in orbit to continue first contact procedures which means the engineering staff will be able to work reduced hours for a while.

End Log

Engineering Log Supplemental:

The Veracruz has received a distress call from the USS Maxwell currently under attack by enemy forces. We have terminated the first contact and have set a course to assist the Maxwell.

End Log

Log entry:

We are still on the totally rad Y/M planet. I am in sickbay now, but never mind that. My own reaction to colored dyes in the candy on the surface is completely irrelevant to this log. Computer... delete that last sentence... I don't think it listens to me when I do that.

Ahem. Becky and Brad have proven very open and gracious hosts. Their attention to detail, down to functioning arcade machines and classic music, is astounding. Captain Aryela and I, mostly she, stumbled upon a secret door, which led to what appeared to be Borg regeneration alcoves. They weren't. However, we determined it's how they manifested a corporeal form. Becky and Brad are energy lifeforms. This would make sense, as the rest of the demon planet would be most inhospitable to life.

Kris identified these alcoves as the honeymoon unit from the Borg and the Beautiful, episode... oh who cares? I seriously question the sanity of our chief security officer based upon his choice of entertainment.

They had Kris' first phaser. They really must have delved into his mind deeply. The candy at the concession stand was even edible... mostly. I still don't want to talk about it.

Composition of "Skittles"

<98% - Sugar, corn syrup, hydrogenated palm kernel oil

remaining ingredients composing less than 2%
Citric Acid, Tapioca Dextrin, Modified Corn Starch, Natural and Artificial Flavors,
Colors (Red 40 Lake, Titanium Dioxide, Red 40, Yellow 5 Lake, Yellow 5, Yellow 6 Lake,
Yellow 6, Blue 2 Lake, Blue 1, Blue 1 Lake), Sodium Citrate, Carnauba Wax.

That's... Dr. McKay-Sheppard is correct. That is a lot of sugar. Out of the 57 gram bag of skittles, 42 grams is all in some form of sugar.

Conclusion:

Late 20th century and early 21st century sweets leads to swift, sugary death. Though they're quite colorful. Maybe I can still have one...
