Captain's Log:

Stardate: 180516

Alert Status: Yellow

The ship has been scanned with an intensity strong enough to be visually witnessed by the crew. The bridge and its officers where scanned, with special attention paid to Lt Commander Kristoff Jameson, who briefly lost consciousness, but then awoke giving a course heading.

While under yellow alert, I chose to risk following that course to see what or who was behind this. What we did not expect was to discover a previously unknown class Y planet that somehow had a small area, or 'splotch' as Commanders Brit and McCellan called it, of class M environment.

It was soon discovered that they scanned us to learn how to create a comfortable and recognizable environment for us. However, by choosing Kris to scan, that meant the environment was filled with old earth movies, architecture and vehicles from the period of earth around the 1980's.

It has been a most curious first contact, but I must admit, but after the severity of our last mission, it is nice to meet someone who simply wants to learn about us. I as well look forward to learning more about them.

Log entry:

En route to... wherever we're going... I should probably pay closer attention at senior staff meetings, we came across a strange phenomenon. An intense beam of energy hit the ship, and manifested itself as a flash of light. It did not appear to have done any damage. This turned out to be some sort of scan. Shortly afterwards, our chief security officer, Kristoff Jameson, went rigid, fainted, and then began to speak in a manner that made no real sense... well less sense than usual anyway.

The first thing he said were coordinates. These coincided with the general vicinity of the origin of the beam. Then he went... very strange. He was talking about a mall and a pretty girl and... He wasn't himself, but he was.

In any event, the coordinates led us directly to a class Y planet, with a splotch of class M. At the time, we had no real understanding how that was possible. This was the point where things made the most sense. That gives an idea of how surreal everything got.

We received a hail from the splotch. "Becky," as she called herself, was quite cheerful and had a very distinct accent. It was Earth, North America, Southern California circa late 20th century. She invited us to come down to the surface.

Due to the properties of the splotch being class M, and not Y, we were able to beam to the surface. Upon arrival, most of us were taken aback by the view. We were surrounded by a conglomerate of Earth's New York City and Los Angeles. There were also things from 20th century folklore and visual literature. They were mainly isolated to the period called the "80s" which would be the 1980s AD by earth reckoning. To no one's surprise, Kris was able to name them all. I was able to identify the delorian from Back to the Future. That "movie" was so full of holes! They would have needed a transporter as well as simply a "time machine" to avoid ending up... sigh... never mind. That's not important.

What's important is, the people of the planet, identified as "Becky" and "Brad" were warm and welcoming, even if their color of clothing gave me a frightful headache. Everything was consistent to the time period. Occasionally, there would be a surge of energy from one of them. It did not appear to do any harm.

They went on to explain that they created this splotch of world to make us feel more at home. They chose a mind to scan, and extrapolated those memories to create the surroundings. The person they scanned was Kris. This explained everything. What the beings must think of us based upon his mind, I shudder to think. Regardless of the culture shock, some of us more than others, this was a very positive experience, and we look forward to establishing further relations.

Conclusion:

This first contact is quite remarkable, considering the lengths in which they went to facilitate it. It also brings to light that we really need to convince Kris to read a book... or at least see something made in the past 300 years.

Voice Recording:

We found a star system! I put the Veracruz into a high orbit within transporter range. A hail came from the planet and we were invited to beam down to see how things were. We were greeted by the sight of an old-style town that was right out of the retro Earth era and aliens who were designed to appear like hippies or Gen-Xers.

The aliens meant us no harm and showed us things like a DeLorean, a diner where they served us very tasteful food, and an old-style arcade along with a records store.

Lieutenant Commander LeighAnn Mantis
